Although I'd be totally cool with visiting any of the islands of the great barrier reef, Hamilton Island is where the action is. From the mainland of Australia, you are just a short flight away from sea, sand, surf, and seclusion. Well, maybe not so much seclusion on Hamilton, since this island houses a majority of the reef's hotels and resorts, plus it's the only island with a big enough airport to accept commercial flights.

Sleep in luxurious top-notch bungalows, or camp on the beach - either way you're in for an awesome time since you can backpack, hike, snorkel, surf, and dive within minutes from anywhere on the island. And the best part? You can dine with the Koala's at the Koala Gallery Wildlife Experience. Where else can you do that? Nowhere . . . exactly.
And If you're lucky enough to travel to Hamilton in late August (the country's "winter" season), you'll catch the annual week-long Yaughing Festival that features over 150 sailboats participating in races around the reef islands. It's sure a sight to be seen.
